FAQ

What is glamping?2016-01-22T19:08:20+00:00

A mashup of “glamorous” and “camping,” glamping is a world-wide phenomenon that combines the thrills of camping with the creature comforts of home. While the term glamping may only be a few years old, the concept has a venerable history. Centuries ago, Turkish Ottomans would set up extravagant tents—appointed with silk fabrics, expensive rugs, and furnishings—as mobile palaces for their sultan. In Africa of the early 1900s, wealthy Americans and Europeans arranged for their safari tents to be outfitted with such luxuries as Persian rugs, linen bedding and a chef to prepare meals. At Conestoga Ranch, our glamping guests luxuriate in amenities that far surpass those found at conventional campgrounds.

What is a Conestoga wagon?2016-01-22T19:06:44+00:00

Conestogas were horse-drawn freight wagons that originated in the Conestoga River region of Pennsylvania’s Lancaster County around 1725. Built by Mennonite German craftsmen, these large, striking wagons were pulled by teams of six horses and carried up to eight tons of farm produce or manufactured goods. White hoods of homespun or canvas protected the goods from weather. Railroads eventually replaced Conestoga wagon trains. The smaller “prairie schooner,” famed for ferrying countless pioneer families to the West, was based on the conestoga design.

Conestoga Ranch’s wagons are based on traditional conestoga designs and were built by our own team of skilled craftsmen.
